The initial idea was to explore the possibility of smoke. Smoke could be controlled by mechanism structure and could be lit up by light. But why smoke, it was actually triggered by a picture I saw.
Some thoughts and questions beforehand
It is an interesting question that why this image could give me a big inspiration and make me excited to explore different forms of smoke. If someone else see it, would they be such inspired? I always believe that there is common sense among all the human-beings, from all over the world, that enable us to generate empathy towards works from other country. But at the same time, I have always wondered how do people from different background(culture, major, job) see the world differently, how much are those background influence us. I feel comfortable to work out some thing related to my Asian background. But is that mean the fact that me outside of Asian area will compromise the concentration and ability to work out these things? I want to embrace the infinite different culture and aesthetic taste but also find my focus point.
Idea in the end
While I kept doing experiment about smoke, I kept thinking the above questions, why the image of smoke inspired me so much, till I realised that the feeling of foggy and smoke is the major visual expression of traditional Chinese painting and also the literal expression of Chinese poetry, and I have been exposed to these a lot, though mostly casual.
So I started to clean up my previous ideas, which are sort of scattered.
The reason why I wanted to have the feelings of foggy and smoke is it reminds me of my previous experience with being in nature and being surrounded by traditional Chinese culture. So the final idea is to express what I see in my mind when I saw the image of smoke, which is more or less the above image. It has the feelings of being unified with nature, every single movement of human is a part of the surrounded nature. They become a poetic image together.
In this scenario, the interaction is expressed with Guqin(similar to zither). So instead of using random body movement to control the image projected on fog, I chose to use string instrument.
The is the plan for final setup.
- String instrument is the only input sending out data to a PC and also another arduino which controls the fans underneath all the funnels.
- PC will generate different abstract patterns according to which string is played and how strong it is and use projector to project onto fog.
- Different string will also control different areas of fans which gives the feeling of disturbance by turning on the fans and generate turbulence air.
