The inspiration for this assignment came from my bamboo curtain. I found that the shadows of lines are extremely beautiful. When the sun moves, the shadows move around too. Make it almost an alive creature.
I wanted to make a slide pieces of different lines combination with the rotatable board. The rotatable wood piece will control the sequence and possibilities of the mix of multiple pattern of acrylic.
So I started drawing lines related patterns in Illustrator and run test with laser cutter on cardboard.
Then I found I used a wrong material that made the light hardly get through. It was the matt clear acrylic. So instead, I change it to normal clear acrylic.
But I found another problem, that is the lines were not that straight because of all the shaken in the laser cutter. So the second time, I use tape to tap it to the laser cutter bed.
And I got better lines.
But again, problems show up.
I found that the lines are too tight. That barely you can see through the board. So I adjusted it in Illustrator and printed them again in different kinds of board.
After finishing the laser cutter part. I wanted to make a stuff to slide show the line board. So I started doing the following.
I cut a long wood rod into 4 pieces. And then drill a hole in the middle of them so that I would be able to drive a screw into them. Now I got a fan like thing and some pieces of acrylic.
So I used glue gun to stick the acrylic board onto the fan sleeves.
In the end I got this. When you project light onto it. It will show the shadows of its lines.
I also combined this with my PComp assignment. To use a sensor to control the led lights below the acrylic board.
Here is a short video for it.
